In twenty-one short stories, Autumn Shadows takes you into the fictional coverts, forests, lakes, and fishing streams of one of America’s best-known outdoor writers. Vance calls his tales of hunting, fishing and small town life “ghost stories.” Yet this reads more like classic sporting literature-with a light touch of the supernatural. The perfect book for a rainy day in camp.
Autumn Shadows explores upland bird hunting and fly fishing, turkey hunting and the ones that got away. Beneath the surface are thoughts of what we want and why-and what we’d give to get it.
Hunting tales include: “The Invincible Grouse Hunter,” “Oldtimers,” “The Brass Compass”; fishing tales: “Unwelcome Stranger,” “Tackle Box Demon,” “The Damned Little Bitty Brown Thing”; stories that connect the past with the present: “Northern Lights,” “Pie Supper,” “Then and Now.”
